DAY 1 bus journey towards Munich (+/-….. km)
We drive towards Munich during the day. At arrival we make a short evening walk along the city hall, the Hofbrauhaus and the Royal Residence. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 2 Munich – Dachau – Vienna (485 km) Breakfast. In the morning we drive about 18 km North from Munich to the concentration camp of Dachau (on mondays closed !!!), one of the witnesses of the dark chapter in German history. Vestiges, photographs, movies and reconstructions remember us about the very first concentration camp which was originally built to detain and “deactivate” the German opponents of the Nazi régime. We strongly recommend this visit, if only to show the younger generations about the dangers of nazism and their modern day followers.
In the afternoon we continue towards Vienna (+/- 465 km). Dinner and overnight in the surroundings of the city.
jour 3 Vienna After breakfast we go towards the center of Vienna. We start however our day programme with a visit at Schönbrunn palace, the old summer residence of the imperial family derives its name from the beautiful spring in the park. We visit the interiors with the private appartments of Maria-Theresa. Another option is to visit the Albertina, with the finest collection of prints, drawings and aquarelles in the world. After lunch we go for a walk in the city center. The Hofburg complex includes the former private rooms of the imperial family, several museums and the national library. We continue then towards the St Stephen cathedral which is the real center of Vienna and the living heart of the town. From there we arrive at Schwedenplatz where we find the only medieval church remaining in Vienna. Then we take the bus or go by public transport (for smaller groups) for a tour around the Ringstrasse which surrounds the center and pass in this way the city hall, the parliament, the museum quarter at Maria Theresa square, the former military barracks, the Burgtheater, the opera, the city park with the gilded statue of Strauss, etc …. Dinner and overnight in the surroundings of Vienna.
DAY 4 Vienne
Breakfast at the hotel. We start our day at UNO City, the United Nations building complex situated in the Donaupark. We will take an 252 m elevator ride up the Donauturm (open from 10AM) for the views. After that we continue towards the Hundertwasser house, the most famous social housing project by the architect / artist Hundertwasser. A motley collection of diverse forms and colours with trees on the roof and balconies make this building of 50 living quarters look like a painting. After that some free time to have a snack at one of the many possibilities around the house.
In the afternoon we leave Vienna for an excursion to Mayerling. This hunting lodge was the place where crown prince Rudolf committed suicide and killed his lover Maria Vetsera, 17 years of age at the time. In the immediate neighbourhood, we’ll find one of the most beautiful and ancient medieval Cistercian abbeys in Austria, Heiligenkreuz. Also well worth the visit! We return then to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
jour 5 Vienna – Telč – Prague (436 km) After breakfast transfer towards Prague. On the way there we stop for a visit at Telč, also called small Venice of Moravia and a real gem of this region. The main attraction besides the monumental Renaissance castle surrounded by an English landscaped park, is the historical central square. No modern constructions here to disturb the picturesque collection of original renaissance and baroque style houses. We continue towards Prague where we expect to arrive around 5 PM. Check-in and dinner. First acquaintance with the illuminated city center in the evening and then overnight.
DAY 6 Prague After breakfast visit of the unique Jewish museum of Prague. The guide will take you for a walking tour including entrance at the various synagogues, the old cemetery and the small museum with drawings of Jewish children from WWII. In the afternoon then time for a visit to the Prague Castle district and after that a bit of free time to enjoy some shopping (shops are open till 9 PM).
If desired a music and/or dancing night out in town. Overnight at the hotel.
DAY 7 Prague – Nuremberg – Frankfurt Am Main (517 km) Breakfast and check-out. We drive now direction to Nuremberg for a visit (+/-3h30 by bus). We stop here for photos at the former NSP nazi party head quarters where nowadays we find an information center. Then we pass the courthouse where from the 20th of November till the 1st of October 1945 the famous Nuremberg trials took place. The building is not always accessible as it is still used actively as a court today. Free time for lunch in the historical center of the town. Another option is to continue for a further hour and to stop at the town of Würzburg with its superb “Residenz” of princes. After one of the above, we continue towards the area of Frankfurt for dinner and overnight.
DAY 8 Travel day from Frankfurt Am Main towards home.
Breakfast in the morning and return home. On the way, according where you are returning to, other stops are possible for instance at Cologne.
